Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to take an open studies Cyanotype class at MICA here in Baltimore! Throughout those four weeks, I spent countless hours in their basement darkroom going through the wringer of trial and error, figuring out all the nuanced quirks that make the cyanotype process so cool but also so unforgiving. I had a lot of prints turn out successful, and just as many turn out as flops. Ya live and ya learn! In the meantime, though, I’m happy to have some of the better successes available for your walls. If you’re unfamiliar with the cyanotype process—google it. The internet could explain it better than I could.

Because of the experimental nature of cyanotypes, each of these prints will look a little different from their brethren. Some have deeper blues, some have a dreamier haze. I photographed the full batches here, but I’m only selling the ones that I deemed passable. If you’re someone who’s into slightly imperfect art and very cool experimental processes… then these are definitely for you.

• The Mill was my beast of burden throughout this class. I was determined to make an edition of this print throughout my time there, but the Cyanotype gods were fighting against me. I had to retool my transparency five different times, and it took me days to figure out the proper burn time. All the prints you see here—each of them cooked for AT LEAST 50 minutes under the UV lamp. So multiply that by how many there are… I spent a lot of time waiting for those prints to burn.

• For this series, I created the image by layering plant material on top of the print before burning it, creating the silhouettes of leaves and florals in the image. The image is of Crystal Mill in Colorado, taken from a 35mm film photo I shot there earlier this summer. I suppose this Mill has become a muse of sorts to me…
