There sits an ornate Victorian at 710 Ashbury in San Francisco, a house that’s seen a little bit more action than the others around it. From 1966-1968, 710 served as the crash pad for Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Billy, and Pigpen… and the launch pad for one of the greatest forces in music and counterculture that the world has ever seen. The Grateful Dead’s residency at 710 was, in the grand scheme of things, very short-lived… But if those walls could talk, I bet they’d tell you the most batshit stories you’ve ever heard.

I’ve been dreaming of making a 710 tribute print for a few years now, I think I just wasn’t sure how I wanted to do it. So, last year (A year ago from today! Time is wild!), I shot a roll of film out front, hoping that one of these frames would give me the reference photo that I needed. I didn’t necessarily want to capture the house in its full glory, just capture the parts that told the story… the elaborate front stoop, the light upstairs, my made-up tributes carved into the tree out front. I got my reference photo, and I got to carving.

710 Ashbury is my homage to a very special house that brought life to a very special band. It’s a 9×12 hand-carved linoleum block print, printed on an 11×14 sheet with hand-torn deckled edges. I know shipping sucks, but unfortunately these gotta go out in a tube.
